I am Ariadne R. Petrucelli. The R stands for Rodriguez my maiden name. I was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1961. In 1964, at the age of 2, we moved to the US. My parents’ plan was to spend 3 years there to study English and enjoy the culture. We made Queens, New York our home. Well, three years became ten and finally, in 1974, we returned to Colombia. I lived there from ages 12 until 16. These years were crucial to my development as I learned to appreciate what being “Latina” was all about. We returned to the US because my father really missed living there. My mother and I had enjoyed Colombia but were happy to return. We relocated in my junior year of high school. In college I studied electrical engineering.
Upon graduation I accepted a position with a top global conglomerate. My first assignment took me to their Turbine Division in Schenectady, New York. This is when I learned to ski and continue to enjoy it to this day. I also obtained a masters in engineering in Schenectady. My second engineering assignment was in the company’s Aerospace Division in King of Prussia, PA. It was there that I met my future husband who is a South Jersey boy. We both agreed to quit our jobs and go back to Graduate school full-time. We moved to Boston, MA to get our MBA’s. It was during these years we both developed our passion for cooking. After our graduations in 1990 we relocated to New Jersey. I went on to work in business development and international marketing roles. We got married in 1991. After wanting a dog my whole life I finally got not just one but two yellow Labrador puppies in 1992. We named them Tokyo and Paris. Tokyo and Paris were a huge positive impact in my life.
In 1997, I became an expat partner when my husband accepted a position in Brussels, Belgium. We had wanted to live overseas and jumped at the opportunity. This move also coincided with our first pregnancy so I decided to take time off from career. We spent four amazing years in Brussels where both our children were born. In 2001, we returned to the United States with our two dogs and two children. We lived 5 years in Westport, CT. Eventually, our puppies grew old and died. In 2007 we moved to West Chester, PA. We had the joy of welcoming our chocolate Labrador into the family that same year. In 2011, we had the opportunity to relocate to London, UK where we currently reside.
My sabbatical is going on 14 years. I am the mother of two wonderful teens, a 14 year-old son and a 12 year-old daughter. I like to think of myself as an executive coach to the future leaders of the world, a.k.a. Mom. I enjoy food, cooking, wine, beer, travel, dogs, skiing, photography, walking, and all things international. I am fluent in Spanish and have raised our children bi-lingual. I practice mindfulness and work out. I collect cook books (my husband keeps saying to not buy more). I like to think of myself as a guitar player although it’s been a while since I’ve played, but that does not take away my love for the instrument. I also like to think of myself as a positive person but I still find occasions to complain when at times my glass goes from half full to half empty. My family likes to jokingly set a daily limit on my number of complaints during vacations.
I hope my overall life and international experiences serve as a source of support, encouragement, and entertainment to my readers.
